This website was developed for the Indiana University department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology’s undergraduate/graduate course on Chinese film music. The problem posed was to create a multimedia website offering information on Chinese minority group and representations of these groups across time through film. Additionally, this website needed to present a critique of two popular Asian films featuring Chinese minorities.
Initially, a focus group was held with students to get a better understanding of their current knowledge and educational needs. The content was then developed for this website based on user requirements as well as my own research into minorities groups living within China and general techniques used in film critique. Sketches and graphic mockups were used prior to the development phases and user feedback was incorporated in the final design. A cardsorting technique was also used to guide information architecture. Video was captured from VHS tapes, edited, and optimized for the web.
The final site was developed based on multiple iterations of user feedback as well as conceptual sketches and graphical mockups.
The final site was developed to cater to the educational needs of students during the course phase focusing on minority representations in Chinese film. This website was used as an online educational supplement to course lecture content and discussion. A user-centered design process was used in the development of this site to take into account student requirements and present information in an accessible and culturally sensitive manner.
